| cv JAMES FINLAY print cv Statement Photography givens me energy to document the understated and extraordinary images that lie within the detail of the landscape before me: photographs that contain a genuine sense of place. This landscape can be both literal and abstract in vast remote vistas or the compact urban sprawl. From the grand breathtaking vastness of the Arctic, finding the simplest details in the frozen ripples of cascading silky ice carved by the wind through to a downtown cityscape reflected in a few panes of glass, my enjoyment of photography is the ability to keep taking pleasure from these captured evocative moments that go beyond the visual. I shoot as much as I can full frame and crop the image in the viewfinder using my feet. As photographer Ernst Hass said, "The most important lens you have is your legs!" I finally take the picture the moment my breath is still and the excited inner voice shouts, "now!" Part of my work is shot digitally and I take extra pride when having the time to shoot on film using medium and panoramic formats as this is the nostalgia for traditional photographic values.
